Aspira (aspīrā) is the second person singular active imperative form of the Latin word aspīrō which literally means "I breathe." The Latin word stems from spīrō ("I breathe") with the prefix ad- which intensifies the addended verb. Therefore, I interpret Aspira to mean: "Take a deep breath." I hope that all of my patients will take a deep breath in... and out... with me whenever they read the word. Noticing your breath and mindfully breathing deeply are great techniques for reducing anxiety in the moment.
